Introduction to calligraphy would need us to travel back in time when the art of writing started with the evolution of homo sapiens. It is the visual representation of writing which is more artistic and expressive.

Ancient calligraphy

Calligraphy is as old as human civilization and as varied as the various cultures spread across different continents. The different forms of calligraphy prevalent were Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Philippine, Indian, Islamic, etc. It is said that the Chinese style originated in 2nd BC and the Islamic calligraphy was also called the language of the gods.

Modern Calligraphy

The modern revival of calligraphy began at the end of the 19th century, influenced by the aesthetics and philosophy of William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement. Edward Johnston is regarded as being the father of modern calligraphy.
